How private equity can help founder-led succession planning

Highlights

  • For founders looking to step back, thoughtful succession planning can protect their legacy while ensuring the business is equipped to thrive under its next generation of leadership.
  • Maintaining culture as founders and leaders transition away can help preserve the company’s values to continue to attract the right talent and clients.
  • Careful succession planning looks forward, building the leadership and capabilities the business will need for its future ambitions rather than simply focusing on departing leaders today.
Succession is one of the most significant strategic decisions a company will face. Often built on deep expertise, entrepreneurial instinct and long-standing customer relationships, founder-led businesses often have an additional layer of complexity to navigate when it comes time to step back.

For many founders, succession is about more than retirement; it is about preserving culture, protecting customers and employees, and ensuring the business continues to thrive long after they hand over responsibility to the next generation of leadership. Increasingly, founders are looking for partners that can help them navigate that transition while creating the platform for the next phase of growth.

"One of the things we look for is founders who have built exceptional businesses and recognise that the skills needed to create a company are not always the same as those needed to lead the next stage of growth," says Freddy West, Partner and Chief People Officer at Inflexion.

Succession isn't about replacing entrepreneurs — it's about complementing them with the leadership, governance and capabilities that allow the business to scale while preserving what made it successful.

Finanzen.net

For Finanzen.net, founder succession has meant creating the leadership, governance and operating model that allows founders to move from running the business to shaping its future.

A year after its carve-out from Axel Springer, the digital broker and financial information business had evolved from two largely independent businesses into an integrated financial platform, allowing the founders to move away from day-to-day management while remaining actively involved at board level.

The opportunity was exciting and extended beyond the carve-out itself. Finanzen.net comprised Germany's largest financial information portal and the fast-growing ZERO digital broker. Although each business had been successful independently, there was limited integration between them. Working alongside management, Inflexion developed a strategy to merge the two businesses into a single customer journey, allowing users to move seamlessly from financial news and market insights through to investing.

The value creation plan required substantial organisational change and was supported by Inflexion's Value Acceleration and Talent teams. Governance was strengthened with the appointment of former BlackRock Europe executive David Blumer as Chair, while the leadership team was expanded with a new CEO, COO, CTO and operational leadership across both the portal and brokerage businesses. Engineering capacity was tripled within eight months.

The commercial benefits are already coming through. Around six million unique people now visit the portal each month, with circa 29,000 new brokerage clients acquired directly from the portal in 2025. By connecting content and investing into a single ecosystem, customer acquisition costs are falling while customer lifetime value is expected to increase as additional products are introduced.

Importantly for the founders, they have been able to achieve the transition they wanted. Rather than leaving the business, they have stepped away from day-to-day operational responsibilities while remaining closely involved at board level, supported by a strengthened executive team capable of leading the next phase of growth.

“Working with Inflexion has been a highly collaborative and value-accretive experience,” says Muhamad Chahrour, CEO at Finanzen since January 2026. “Their focused and well-structured due diligence minimised management disruption during an intense phase, while their deep operational engagement enabled a seamless leadership transition.”

Nodor

Recognised as the largest and most advanced maker of premium dartboards and darts in the world, Nodor Group traces its roots to 1919. A successful century of growth saw the founding family turn to Inflexion to accelerate its journey further. “In the first 12 months alone, we hired a large number of people and completed a major acquisition. Without Inflexion’s backing, it would likely have taken a decade,” says Vince Bluck, Managing Director of Nodor at the time of the Inflexion investment.

Nodor’s key brands, Winmau and Red Dragon, are the equipment names behind many of the world’s most talented professionals, with Winmau being in four continents and exporting to over 100 countries worldwide, with products sold via trade arrangements with major retailers as well as direct to the consumer.

Having grown steadily for decades meant the family leadership team could plan and evolve gradually. But rapid growth challenged that pace. “That’s when we knew we needed to bring in external capability,” recalls Fiona Bluck, part of the senior leadership team at the time of investment. “Private equity gave Nodor the ability to move quickly. We weren’t just looking for capital – we wanted a partner who could come on the journey with us,” she says.

The pace of change since the investment has been significant, with Inflexion’s value creation team bringing the expertise Nodor needed. “We’ve introduced a new structure, a new C-suite, interim roles, and an enhanced formalisation of systems. It’s been challenging, particularly as teams come together, but we’re now coming through that transition,” Fiona says.

The Inflexion investment also facilitated the retirement of Alex Bluck, who led product development and manufacturing, while his brother Vince Bluck and his wife Fiona have reinvested and remain involved in the business along with both their sons.

Inflexion’s investment is supporting Nodor with geographic and channel expansion, product development, and boosting its technology to enhance the customer experience. This includes integrating a digital ecosystem for darts to engage a new generation of players, while the international focus is largely on the US, where Nodor has already established an office in Dallas.

Industry veteran Tom Brown joined as CEO, bringing extensive experience of scaling international consumer brands, while Greg Neuenhaus was appointed Chair. The founding family has remained closely involved, ensuring the heritage, product expertise and entrepreneurial culture that underpinned the company's success continue to shape strategic decisions.

The strengthened leadership is paying off. Nodor completed the acquisition of AutoDarts in 2025, and since then has worked with Inflexion to build a new digital platform to enhance its auto-scoring technology, launched at IFA, Berlin in September 2026.

The acquisition and ongoing focus on digital is transforming Nodor’s commercial model. While customers purchase Autodarts X as a sophisticated camera system, premium software features – including an AI referee, enhanced player statistics, tournament management and customisation tools – are offered on a subscription basis.

“The Inflexion investment wasn’t really about the money,” says Vince. “I see our family more as stewards of this great business. But to take it to the next level we needed a new system, a new structure.”

Medik8

Premium skincare business Medik8 has built its reputation on science-led innovation since being founded by British scientist Elliot Isaacs in 2009. As consumer demand accelerated, the challenge shifted from creating products to building an organisation capable of serving global markets.

Elliot chose to partner with Inflexion in 2021, and they set to work on an ambitious organisational redesign to enable growth. It aligned the CEO role more closely with global objectives, added dedicated resource for D2C and data, strengthened commercial leadership with two new senior sales hires, and refined global roles to sharpen regional focus, especially in Asia-Pacific and the US. Targeted C-suite appointments addressed key capability gaps needed to deliver on the company’s ambitions, while two additional senior sales leaders were brought in to accelerate commercial momentum. A new Chair, CEO, Chief Commercial Officer, Chief Marketing Officer and US General Manager were appointed, while over 70 new roles were created across digital, innovation, sustainability and data in the first year of partnership.

This revised and enlarged structure allowed Elliot to focus more on the areas where he added the greatest value, such as product innovation, scientific leadership and long-term strategy, while experienced executives drove commercial execution.

The results were transformational. During Inflexion's investment, sales quadrupled while headcount tripled. Direct-to-consumer sales increased sixfold as the business accelerated its digital strategy, while the US became an increasingly important growth engine, with its share of revenues increasing sevenfold. Investment in a new 100,000 sq ft Innovation Centre tripled research and development capacity, creating the platform for continued product innovation.

“Inflexion’s backing accelerated the growth plan we already had in place,” Elliot says. “Their support gave us the confidence to heavily invest – rapidly building capability, expanding internationally, and strengthening the team. Over four years we tripled headcount and evolved into a more globally structured business, all while preserving, indeed enhancing, the unique characteristics that define the Medik8 brand promise.”

L'Oréal acquired a majority stake in 2025, with Inflexion retaining a minority stake.

Blue Light Card

As the UK’s leading online discount marketplace exclusively serving the frontline community, Blue Light Card’s entire ethos revolves around its commitment to giving back to those who give so much to us. When the founders decided to plan for succession in 2022, preserving this purpose-driven culture was paramount, and funding from Inflexion would support the transition.

Their approach meant they remained involved as board members to provide strategic guidance to the executive team. CEO Alidad Moghaddam, who joined in 2023, worked in partnership with the founders to ensure growth initiatives remain aligned with the company’s mission.

The C-suite was expanded with new Chief Commercial, Technology, and Product Officers, creating a robust foundation reflective of its growth ambitions. Serial consumer executive Peter Plumb was appointed Chair of the business.

“They formed the core of our leadership team and complemented existing tenured BLC executives, bringing fresh thinking to the leadership while maintaining a purpose led culture,” recalls Alidad Moghaddam, CEO of Blue Light Card.

Growth was impressive: member numbers increased by more than 75% since Alidad took the helm in 2023, and in the last 12 months the business has delivered over £600m in savings to its members, while staff headcount has grown more than 35%.

Alongside founder succession, a new senior team and a major replatforming to improve scale and reliability, Inflexion also supported BLC’s expansion into Australia.

Working alongside Inflexion, the business broadened its proposition beyond emergency service workers to include teachers, significantly increasing its addressable membership base while remaining true to its core purpose of recognising frontline service. The business expanded eligibility to new groups such as retirees, and expanded categories like grocery, travel and household essentials to make the platform more relevant to everyday life. This saw membership double from around three million to six million verified users.
