The Inflexion Foundation has committed £375,000 over three years to Blue Marine Foundation, a global marine conservation charity  with a mission to see at least 30% of the world’s ocean under effective protection by 2030. The grant will be paid in three annual instalments of £125,000.

The grant will support Blue Marine’s Solent Oyster Restoration Project. This project is part of the wider Solent Seascape Project, the UK’s first seascape-scale nature restoration programme delivered in partnership with nine other organisations including leading environmental charities, research institutions, local authorities and government agencies.

Over three years, Blue Marine aim to deploy up to 120,000 native oysters at restoration sites, bring up to four hectares of seabed under active restoration and engage 500 community members through volunteering and education. The grant will also support Blue Marine’s wider work across marine science, climate, economics, education and media.

This is the Foundation's first marine grant. The UK's seascapes are among the most productive habitats around our coast and the most depleted, and restoring them is a long-term project, and one the Foundation is committed to supporting.

Marine restoration is slow, patient work, and multi-year support is what allows it to succeed. The Solent's native oyster reefs once filtered the estuary's waters and supported the species that lived alongside them. Rebuilding that habitat is a long-term undertaking, and this commitment gives us the time to do it well.
